Killarney - 7/18/06
On the drive to Killarney.
Arrived in Killarney in the late afternoon and wanted to stay in a B&B. I must have been to every B&B and none of them had a room, I was told it was due to a big group of horse races going on in town this week. So I got a bed in a great hostel called the "Sugan Hostel". After that I went out to eat and explore the town. I went ahead and saw the new "Superman" movie at the Cinema in town. Got dinner and then sat in a pub where there was an awesome Oldies band playing. The town has so much live music at night it was hard to choose where to go!
I really wanted to see the Ring of Kerry so I got on a tour bus that left at 10:30am and got back at 6:00pm. The bus was really full so the Bus driver had me sit in the coach seat right next to him, so I had a panoramic view of everything!
(See "22. Kells Bay")
(See "23. Ballinskelligs")
(See "24. Ladies View")
We also made a stop at a place were we got a sheep dog demonstration. They must have been the smartest dogs in the world, he would literally just make noises at them and they would do exactly what he wanted! He could control the sheep perfectly. The dogs both had different sets of sounds so that they didn't get confused and when they were far away the shepherd would use a weird whistle to give the commands. He could retrieve sheep that were way up on the mountain by just blowing a whistle a whole lot! How cool is that?
The bus driver had been talking about this big show that was going on with Liam O'Connor and he made me reservations, the show was absolutely incredible! I didn't know it was possible to play the Accordion like he did! And the rest of the band was awesome as well! (They even had the drummer from Guns & Roses)
The show ended around 10:30pm, and I was tired of Irish music so I went to a pub with a live rock group and then went to bed.
After getting breakfast and using the internet for a bit, I decided that I would do some exploring on my own in the Killarney National Park. I walked a ways to the lake of Lough Leane, and spent most of my day there (I even got some fishing time in, although I didn't catch anything... hah)
Ross Castle, on the shore of the lake.
One of many huge trees in the forrest.
Lough Leane Lake
Another view of the castle.
A river near town. Ireland is a
fly-fisherman's paradise by the way
St. Mary's Cathedral on the edge of town.
After I got back and got some food, I went to see an Irish film called "The Wind That Shakes the Barley". I went on the internet until the cafe closed and then went to the same pub I did yesterday to hear some rock music, the band that night was incredible, very entertaining :)
Got packed and took my laundry to a launderette, the wait was 3 hours so I took the time to update the web page. I believe today I am heading to the city of Kenmare, an older couple at the Liam O'Connor show recommended that I go there.
